Withington Suite

Written in 1999–2002 | Duration: c.17 minutes

Withington Suite is in five contrasting movements. The first movement is cool and unemotional; the second and third movements are nostalgic in tone, with a lyrical trombone solo in the third. The fourth movement has a darker character and is more contrapuntal. It was written in 2000 and is in a small way an homage to J.S. Bach, the 250th anniversary of whose death fell in that year. The fifth movement is more celebratory, and rides along on a wave of syncopated rhythms and rich chords.

Rigoletto Variations

Written in 1998 (revised) | Duration: c.20 minutes

Rigoletto Variations – my first piece for brass band – was written in 1998, but went through several stages of revision and only reached its final version in 2013. It is based on the song ‘Questa o quella’ from Verdi’s opera Rigoletto.
